The Muslim Charity Law Conference was born out of a recognition that Muslim-led charities in the UK — from mosques and Islamic schools to Zakat-based organisations, Waqf structures, and international humanitarian NGOs — face a distinctive set of legal, regulatory, and governance challenges that have, for too long, gone without a dedicated professional forum. As practitioners at the heart of this sector, we have seen first-hand the complexity that arises at the intersection of charity law, Sharia compliance, and community purpose.
We have witnessed the gaps: the absence of a space where trustees, leaders, and advisers working with Muslim charities could come together, share expertise, and leave better equipped to serve their communities. This conference is our answer to that need. Inspired by the enduring model of the Catholic Charity Conference, which began with a small gathering of professional advisers in 1991 and has convened annually ever since, we believe that the Muslim charity sector deserves exactly the same: a regular, high-quality, specialist forum that grows and evolves with the sector it serves.
gunnercooke is the largest law firm in the UK with a dedicated focus on Muslim-led charities, and it is from that foundation that this conference has been created. Whether you are a trustee navigating the Charity Commission's requirements, an adviser seeking the latest developments in charity law, or a charity leader looking to connect with peers and specialists, this conference is for you.
Our vision is simple: to provide a platform where knowledge is shared openly, where the unique needs of Muslim charities are taken seriously, and where every attendee leaves with practical insight they can put to work. We are delighted you are here, and we look forward to building this community together.
The Muslim Charity Law Conference is guided by an Advisory Committee of dedicated professionals, scholars, trustees, and leaders drawn from across the Muslim charity sector. Each member brings deep experience and expertise in their field — whether in charity law and governance, philanthropy, education, or community leadership — and together they reflect the breadth and diversity of the sector this conference exists to serve.
The Advisory Committee plays a central role in shaping the conference, helping to set the agenda and ensuring that the topics, speakers, and discussions reflect the issues that matter most to Muslim charities on the ground. Their insight and commitment ensure that the Muslim Charity Law Conference remains relevant, rigorous, and rooted in the real needs of the sector.
